rear end/rear
axle
Importance of
inspecting rear end on a used car:
Rear end or
rear axle is an integral component of rear wheel drive car or all wheel/4 wheel
drive car and consists of a differential and axles. It is important to check for
differential wear, as any signs of wear might indicate potential costly repair
down the road.
What to look for when
checking rear end/rear axle?
First thing
is to look for leaks. Look underneath the car in the back and usually you can
spot at least part of the differential (it's a round housing in the middle of
the rear axle). If there are any oil stains around it, it's a clear indication
of leak and possible excessive wear as a result of that leak.
Take the car
for a test drive and listen for clunks coming from the rear end. Any whining
noises, clunks or grinding noises are all indicators of excessive wear and not
only reduce the quality of the ride, but also create a possibility of breakage
soon down the road. Worn differential might lockup when it completely breaks
down, creating a potentially hazardous situation. Replacing parts inside the
differential is rather costly, therefore if you spot any noises or feel and
"looseness" at the differential during a test drive, it's better to
avoid such car.
Sometimes the
differential can get so bad that it will start whine as if you put your car in
reverse (that distinct sound when the car moves in reverse).
If the
differential is leaking, but you don't notice any adverse clunking or any other
noises coming from it, then the it's probably isn't worn too much, but it's up
to you to buy it or not. You will still have to fix the leak as soon as
possible.
Conclusion:
Look at the differential
and see if you spot leaks. Check for unusual noises or "looseness" and
if you notice any of the listed symptoms, avoid such car.
