lights
Importance of checking brakes on a used car:
Often times used car
buyers neglect to inspect proper operation of all lights outside the vehicle.
This is quite important, because sometimes certain lights might not work and
it's not because the bulb is out, rather it's because the wiring is
malfunctioning. Also sometimes there is malfunction or improper modifications
done to lighting systems and this causes lights some lights to go out during
braking or cause other oddities. We've all seen cars on the road that have
messed up lights with different brightness or no rear or front lights at all.
Troubleshooting electrical problems can be quite costly and time consuming,
therefore it would be wise to try to avoid having to fix it by checking for
problems before buying a car.
Turn on the headlights and
see if all lights work, then get someone to press on brake pedal as you walk
around and look if all lights are operational and that no lights go on or off
when the brake pedal is pressed. Turn on turn signals and see if they blink at
constant and stable rate and no other lights blink, other than blinkers. Do same
with emergency flashers. Try to turn high beams on and off and see if it causes
any lights to go out. On some cars there are separate headlamps for regular beam
and high beams and usually the regular beams go out when you turn on high beams.
If it's important to you,
check to see if the interior lights goes on when you open the door and goes off
when you close the door. If it stays on, it might indicate faulty door sensor.
Check to see if instrument panel and other panels light up as they should, because
replacing light bulbs inside the dashboard or gauge cluster can be quite a
hassle.
If the car has additional
lighting, such as aftermarket installed headlamps, make sure they are wired
properly and safely.
Conclusion:
Checking lamps is easy,
yet rather essential, because diagnosing electrical problems is quite costly and
time consuming.
